Children’s Book Author and Her Husband Admit to Abusing Their Adopted Kids.

A Florida children’s book author and her husband have admitted to abusing and neglecting their three adopted children. One of the kids, an 8-year-old girl, ended up in the hospital in serious condition after suffering from organ failure.

Reports say the little girl weighed only 40 pounds and was physically beaten with a tool called a “whacker,” locked away, and stopped from talking to her siblings.

Jennifer Wolfthal, 45, who wrote A Real Friend, and her husband Joseph Wolfthal, 43, who works as an engineer at Lockheed Martin, both pleaded guilty to three charges each of child abuse and neglect, according to court documents shared with USA Today.

One of the kids told authorities that she was isolated and spent most of her time locked in her room, away from everyone, including her brothers and sisters. Two of the other children said they were punished by being sent to bed with cold water poured over them and left in that condition all night.

As part of their punishment, the kids were made to write the same sentences over and over again. Investigators found more than 1,100 paragraphs, including one that said: “My body stays flat on the bed at all times. I was never given permission to move or say anything. Now I get to write about this along with everything else. I’m a fool.”

The couple was arrested in 2021 after their 8-year-old daughter was rushed to the hospital with sepsis, a staph infection, black eyes, open wounds, pneumonia, and severe malnutrition. The other children were also found to be malnourished and bruised after a welfare check was done at their home in Casselberry, Florida.

The kids had been adopted, and according to reports, they were so scared of their parents that they refused to leave their rooms at night to use the bathroom, causing accidents. One of the children said she hadn’t been bathed in months and was only given a mix of cereal and vegetable puree to eat, sometimes not getting her first meal until the late afternoon.
