Some events from history fade with time, but Mahesh Bhardwaj refuses to let that happen. His book, The Last Mission, brings back memories of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, a moment that changed the course of South Asia. Through detailed research and strong storytelling, he sheds light on the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers and the Bangladeshi people.
Bhardwaj, a senior officer in the Indian Revenue Service, has always been drawn to history. A graduate of Himachal Pradesh University, he holds degrees in science, education, and business. His background in public service has given him a deep understanding of politics, war, and the impact of major events on common people.
What Inspired Him to Write This Book?
The idea for The Last Mission came to him after a tragic event in 2001. Sixteen BSF jawans were brutally killed by Bangladeshi security forces at the Pyrdiwah border. This led him to think about India’s role in creating Bangladesh in 1971. He started looking deeper into the war and was shocked to learn that nearly 3 million people lost their lives in one of the biggest genocides in history.
Originally, he planned to write a movie script, but he later turned it into a novel. The book tells the story of Pakistani brutality against Bengali troops, the formation of Mukti Bahini, and how India stepped in to change the course of history. It also questions the two-nation theory and the cost of ignoring democratic values.
A Book That Keeps Readers Hooked
Many people who have read The Last Mission say it is hard to put down. The detailed storytelling and real-life events make it a must-read, especially for those interested in war history and politics. Some readers even feel it has the potential to be turned into a movie.
His Next Project
Bhardwaj is now working on a novel about the 1947 Partition. It follows two brothers from Rampur, both of whom served as majors in the British Indian Army. After the Partition, they find themselves on opposite sides—one joins the Indian Army, while the other becomes part of Pakistan’s forces. The book will focus on how the Partition tore families apart and created lasting wounds.
